HISTORY AND TEAM

Cherishing history - sums us up perfectly

historie

The Romans are supposed to have planted vines in the Ahr valley. Winegrowing in the area is documented as dating back almost 1,200 years. In the Ahr valley we have grown up with this tradition. We are the third generation to build our lives around wine.

Max Schell’s forebears dedicated themselves to producing wine. The founder of the estate’s current incarnation, Max Schell, felt drawn to traditional winemaking; son-in-law Bernhard Schulze-Icking, daughter Beate’s husband, is passionate about continuing Max’s life’s work. Coming from the dairy industry, he immersed himself in the life of a winemaker and continually modernised and enlarged the estate.

Son Wolfgang, a qualified master winemaker, and his wife Katarina, who brings valuable experience from her career as a hotelier at the famous Hotel Hohenzollern and as a certified
sommelier, complement his father’s knowledge with the drive and panache, receptiveness and modern know-how of a young, go-getting generation.

Daughter Annika follows their example. She has taken part in the harvest from a young age and even now gets involved in the wine-tasting sessions when help is required.

Wolfgang Schulze-Icking’s team is boosted by a host of regular helpers, who mainly bring in the precious yield from the vineyards in the harvest season between September and
October.
